The wait is almost over! The brand new range of Rab sleeping bags hits the shops in March.

The design and manufacture of sleeping bags is where brand founder Rab Carrington started, and now at Rab we continue to innovate and improve on the knowledge he provided. Working closely with researchers at Leeds University we've had our 'eureka moment'.

After lots of hard work and by adopting a scientific approach we have uncovered the golden equation when it comes to perfect sleeping bag construction. We have designed and developed a groundbreaking range of bags by taking into account, chamber size, differential cut, lofting ability and reams of technical data.

The design and construction of a sleeping bag is as important as the down filling itself. The new range far exceeds industry standards by utilising only the finest construction techniques to promote maximum lofting of the down.

Check out the new Sleeping bags

The Rab brand is renowned for producing outstanding quality clothing and sleeping bags, suitable for extreme cold environments and high altitude mountaineering.

The original ethos of Rab remains core to current product development; a strong focus on using functional designs and high quality fabrics to produce premium gear for mountaineering and polar travel.

X-Trail honoured with Ispo Outdoor Award

Silva X-Trail – the headlamp with intelligent light for serious outdoor activities honoured with ispo Outdoor Award 2010.

The award winning Silva X-Trail is a technical headlamp for serious sports like trail running, mountain biking, cross country skiing and adventure racing. This headlamp features the Silva Intelligent Light® technology, which combines a strong, focused distance light with a wide angle flood light for close vision. An extra wide, anti-slip treated headband ensures that the headlamp stays comfortably in place on uneven terrain.

The jury’s motivation reads: “Owing to lots of experience in the development and manufacture of headlamps, Silva manages to sweep the prize with its striking X-Trail headlamp. This sophisticated, yet handy and lightweight gadget incorporates several smart technical features that improve one’s safety margin and comfort when left out in the dark.”

The Silva X-Trail is a modular headlamp that can be moved between the headband, the helmet attachment and the bike handle bar attachment which are all included. One high power LED reaching 75 meters, and two wide beam performance LEDs for the floodlight close to you provide a light image suitable for all high speed applications. With a maximum brightness of 145 lumens and the choice between five different light modes you can be sure to find the appropriate light for each activity. The water resistance level is IPX6, so not even heavy rain will ruin your planned activities.

Silva X-Trail has an external battery compartment for four AA-batteries, which can be carried on your waist or in a pocket making the head unit light and easy to wear. The weight on the head is only 80 grams. Carrying the external battery compartment inside a jacket will make the batteries last longer in cold conditions. This makes Silva X-Trail suitable for winter endurance sports like cross country skiing.

Silva X-Trail Plus is designed for the frequent user and has an external rechargeable Li-Ion-battery. The battery indicator on both models lets you know how much exercise time you have left to get back home.

Silva’s Alpha lights way in Arctic Challenge

Seal of Approval for Silva’s ALPHA 6 Headlamp: “Probably the Best Headlamp in the World”

Silva got a great big seal of approval from ultra-sport record-breaker Nik Cook for the 5-star performance of its ALPHA 6 headlamp in one of extreme racing’s toughest tests: the 6633 Extreme Winter Ultra Marathon 2010

Nik CookBilled at the toughest, coldest, windiest, non-stop, self-sufficient ultra race on the planet, 6633 is the Arctic Circle latitude which competitors cross on the way to the finish line. They have just 72 hours to cover 120 miles of the most hostile terrain there is, with temperatures dropping as low as -35ºc, 90mph+ winds and hazardous mountain passes to negotiate, all whilst dragging their own food and equipment behind them on sledges.

This year, seasoned racer Nik – who set a new course record, finishing in 38 hours 59 minutes - was relying on this Silva ALPHA 6 headlamp to see him through the event and it didn’t let him down:

I’d been blown away by my APHA 6 running and mountain biking in the UK, but taking it to the Canadian Arctic for the 6633 Ultra was a whole new test for it.  However, it coped with the -35ºc conditions without as much as a stutter, and showed no noticeable drop in either brightness or burn time.  There’s no doubt it aided me considerably in winning the 120-mile race and setting a new course record.  All in all, probably the best headlamp in the world!

Alpha 6Silva sets new standards with our Intelligent Light technology in the ALPHA 6. Perfectly packed with three well-designed light sources which give the right amount of light, both at a distance and close up, the Alpha 6 has a powerful 6.6Ah external battery for long-lasting light, and is supplied both a bicycle and a helmet attachment for extra stability. The Alpha 6 Headlamp retails at £299.99.

The Silva Intelligent Light Autumn competition

The winner of the Silva Intelligent Light Autumn competition has now been selected.

Alpha 6The winner of the Silva Intelligent Light Autumn competition has now been selected. A unanimous jury has choosen Raymond Eckholm from Norway as the worthy winner of a Silva Alpha 6 headlamp, from a fantastic number of entries! . Congratulations Raymond and good luck with your activities!

Raymond’s winning contribution:

I have been mountain biking for 12 years now, but I had my first ride in the dark just a few days ago. A friend of mine had 2(!) Silva Alpha 6 headlamps. We set them up on our bars and off we rode. WOW I am amazed! I did not hold back when riding fast over stones and other obstacles. I gave all and it even added another dimension to the excitement in biking. I am glad I have quit my job as a spinning instructor. Now I have one more evening available for riding in the dark! I have small kids that need both my being there for them, and my money for their first bike, diapers, food, clothing etc.. So, having little money and little time before dark, I would be overexcited to win one of your headlamps. Thank you!

Another great result in the footwear test of Austrian “Land der Berge” magazine: in issue 3/2010 the jury awarded our Atlas GTX the Best Buy – “Preis-Tipp”. The test crew was impressed by the perfect sole design, the stability on the instep, the smooth-running lacing and the low weight – despite its big proportion of leather. The final conclusion: you definitely should try the Atlas GTX when you’re looking for new shoes!

April 2010

The Banks GTX was awarded the “Top-Tipp Komfort” in a boot test of German “Wanderlust” magazine. In the ‘Outdoor’ annual readers’ poll Hanwag can once again report excellent results; namely being awarded second-place in the hiking and walking boot categories. This is a notch upwards from last year’s readers’ poll. We would like to thank all ‘Outdoor’ readers for their support.

This positive result both confirms that we are on the right track regarding our craft and philosophy and it also encourages us to strive harder to provide our customers with great footwear.

In the ‘Trekking-boot’ category Hanwag’s classic boot, the Alaska GTX, bettered its previous years position as did the versatile Banks GTX in its respective ‘Walking-boot’ category.

Furthermore, our Performance XCR was awarded a satisfactory 4th place in the ‘Multi-function shoe’ category.

September 2009

Women are different, so are men. And trekkingboots for women have to be different from those made for men: the foot anatomy and the calves differ from men’s anatomy. All this has to be considered in the design of special womens’ trekking boot models. The sportive German magazine active woman tested trekking boots for women. The Hanwag ATLAS LADY GTX was their favourite and is highly recommended by the testers.

September 2009

The ATLAS GTX ist a genuine trekking boot which walked into the hearts of a huge trekking community very fast. The reasons for this: The boot is rugged, durable and ensures comfortable, sure-footed and safe hiking. We took part at the big test of trekking boots of the German Outdoor Magazine. The editors tested ten models from different brands. Like the many happy consumers they were enthusiastic about the ATLAS GTX and rated it best in test!

April 2009

The Outdoor Magazine (July 2008) has tested eight “allround boots for the mountains”. Our versatile Ferrata Combi GTX achieved the best score: “very good”, the testers concluded. And because this excellent boot has with a very attractive price, the editors called the Ferrata Combi GTX a “BEST BUY” (“Kauftipp”).

April 2008

Approach GTX achieved the highest score in a test of German ‘Outdoor’ magazine
Our brandnew Approach GTX achieved the highest score in a test of German ‘Outdoor’ magazine (April 2008). The testers concluded: “Very good”. The Approach GTX is designed for fast and light mountain sports and features a stiff sole with a climbing zone at the tip for great friction. This makes it a perfect “approach” shoe (telling name...): It is not a multi-purpose outdoor boot, but a specialist for rocky terrain. Nevertheless, the ‘Outdoor’ magazine proved enthusiastic about this boot.
